What would be the most inviting mystery phrase you could embroider on a hat that would secretly capture your feeling of being a skater at the local park in this new and welcoming era of skateboarding? You’re surrounded by familiar kids and adults at different levels, all learning their own version of a similar thing. Maybe something like Sangha, a word you saw in some Buddhist reference book. Originally, it referred to ordained monks and nuns, but more broadly, it seems to mean “community”—a particular community not defined by its success but by its adherence to a path. Skateboarding is a similar endeavor. Most of the time is spent learning and falling, with the occasional breakthrough. Hmmm, what would make this phrase feel like a flavorless, pre-internet, local business.. Name it after a local phenomenon, maybe one tied to the dry days for skating? Rainshadow. Would people in town get it or support it? Would out-of-towners buy into the awkward romance? In the end, you’re not motivated by money—you just want to wear the hat yourself. But they can only be made by the dozen. So you start a skate brand: "Rainshadow Skateboard Sangha". It feels overly long and kind of makes you laugh. You love this life so gosh darn much.
